National parks land use bill tabled in Commons
The federal government has tabled a bill that would limit commercial
growth in Canada's national parks.
Similar legislation was tabled in the last session of Parliament, but
died when the House was prorogued.
The bill makes it clear that 'ecological integrity' must be the number
one priority in managing the parks.
Right now, there are no laws controlling commercial development in park
communities. This bill would put a cap on growth in places such as
Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper.
The limits would be based on local plans, but the minister in charge
would have the final say on land use and community development.
Environmentalists welcome the legislation. Those who represent
commercial interests in Alberta's mountain parks say they're concerned
about the amount of control Ottawa is giving itself, when it comes to
local use of the parks.
