Native fishermen mad
New Brunswick native fishermen are unhappy with the sentences given to non-natives who
vandalized their lobster traps last fall. Burnt Church band councillor Vernon Mitchell
says the $400 fines given to the 22 fishermen were inadequate punishment. The non-native
fishermen were protesting a court ruling that upheld the natives' treaty rights to fish
for lobster in Miramichi Bay. About 3000 native lobster traps were destroyed.
