Richest Canadians listed
For the second straight year, Canadian Business magazine has
compiled a list of the 100 richest Canadians.
Topping the list is publishing magnate, Ken Thomson of Toronto.
The owner of numerous media outlets including The Globe and Mail
newspaper, Thomson's fortune is $23.5 billion.
Rounding out the top four on the list are New Brunswick's Irving
family worth $6.2 billion, the Bombardiers of Montreal at $6 billion
and Ontario's Weston family at $5.35 billion.
Appearing on the list for the first time is Gururaj "Desh"
Deshpande, whose optical networks company, Sycamore Networks, Inc.,
is based in Boston. His $5.05 billion places him fifth on the list.
The top 10 richest Canadians are as follows:
1. Ken Thomson, Toronto. Publishing. $23.5 billion.
2. Irving family, New Brunswick. Various businesses,
including petroleum, forestry, media. $6.2 billion.
3. Bombardier family, Montreal. Aerospace manufacturing.
$6 billion.
4. Galen Weston, Toronto. Retail, groceries, real
estate. $5.35 billion.
5. Gururaj (Desh) Deshpande, Boston. Optical network
components. $5.05 billion.
6. Charles Bronfman, New York. Alcohol, entertainment.
$4.95 billion.
7. Lede brothers, Vancouver. Fibre optics, construction.
$4.6 billion.
8. Jeff Skoll, Palo Alto, Calif. Internet (e-Bay). $3.85
billion.
9. Edward (Ted) Rogers, Toronto. Cable TV, media. $3
billion.
10. Terry Matthews, Ottawa. Telecommunications. $2.8
billion.
