Eichmann memoirs released for court case
Israel has released the prison memoirs of Adolf Eichmann, who was hanged
in the Jewish state in 1962 for his role in running Nazi death camps.
In his memoirs, he decribes the Holocaust as "one of the worst crimes
against humanity and the worst crime perpetuated against the Jewish
people." But he portrays himself as only a small cog in the whole
affair.
The memoirs were released to be included in a libel suit involving the
number of deaths during the Holocaust.
British historian David Irving is suing American professor Deborah
Lipstadt over a book she wrote in which she allegedly maintains that
Irving has denied the Holocaust and distorted statistics.
Irving said he does not deny Jews were killed by the Nazis, but
challenges the number and manner of Jewish concentration camp deaths.
The case is being tried in a British court.
Israel's justice ministry says the manuscript has been forwarded to
Lipstadt. Journalists were given a copy in German via e-mail or on
computer disk. The original is written by hand in Gothic script.
